Finishes and Product Care:
Standard and premium finishes are listed on the reverse side of the tear sheets. The natural color and character of wood and vellum will vary and will subtly affect the final appearance of the piece. This is a natural occurrence and not considered a defect. Finish samples are provided for general reference only and finished product may reflect the variations of the natural materials. One sample will be provided upon request for any order. If more than one sample is requested, a fee will be charged for each sample thereafter. Premium and custom finishes are available upon request and will require a minimum 10% upcharge. Mattaliano reserves the right to increase the upcharge for more difficult finishes. Custom finishes may also extend the lead time.
Remove dust, fingerprints, smoking residue, etc. with a cloth dampened with a cleaning polish or mild detergent solution. Avoid the use of ammonia based products or silicone oils as they may cause damage if used over a long period of time. The finish is resistant to most household spills. However, spills should be wiped up promptly to avoid potential problems. Excessive, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, high temperatures and high humidity can cause damage to both the finish and the wood itself.
Vellum is a natural product produced from goatskin. There will be variances in color and appearance from panel to panel due to the natural characteristics of the skins. The surface is protected with a coat of lacquer. A damp soft cloth can be used to clean it when necessary. There is also a paste wax product called Briwax (clear) that can be used as well. It will clean the vellum as well as give it a bit of a shine. It should be available in any hardware store. Vellum should be kept out of direct sunlight and heat as it will accelerate the natural aging or darkening of the skins.
Gold leaf finishes:
The surface may be lightly dusted with a dry soft cloth or feather duster. No cleaning solutions should be used and the surface should not be buffed or rubbed in any way. The gold leaf is a delicate finish and care should be taken when rearranging or moving. Optimally, rubber surgical gloves should be worn when handling the pieces.
Blackened Wrought Metal:
The surface may be lightly dusted with a dry soft cloth or feather duster, no liquid cleaners should be applied to the surface. If small areas of rust occur, rub area with fine steel wool to remove rust, then rub the area with a clear paste wax and buff with a soft cloth.
Stone is a natural material and will vary in tone, color and markings. Spills should be blotted with a soft cloth immediately to prevent the stain from being absorbed by the stone. Our supplier recommends a product from Stone Essentials called Daily Cleaner with Protector to clean the stone tops. Acetone will remove finger prints from the honed black granite tops.
